Strategy for Defeating Flea

A little bat is following you...  Flea appears three times in the Chrono Series of Games. He appears twice in Chrono Trigger: Once in Magus' Castle and then again during the event in Ozzie's Fort. In Chrono Cross, he appears as something of an "Easter Egg." In order to find Ozzie, Flea, and Slash, you must first beat the game and then return to the Bend of Time in NewGame+ after a certain point in time.

Chrono Trigger___________

A little bat is following you...  Once you've been confronted by Ozzie on the ground floor in Magus' castle, you can either go left or right. Flea's room will be on the right, Slash's will be on the left. Once you arrive, however, you find a being in Flea's room labeled "Flea?." Treat it as you would any Juggler, alternating your attacks based on what you attacked first with. (e.g. Physical Attack, then magic, then physical again. Or vice versa.) Once you've beaten it, it will perform MP Buster on one of your party. The real Flea, in the form of the bat that has been following you around since you entered the Magic Cave, will then make his appearence.

At this point, you'll have a chance to use recovery items and/or switch party members. I suggest strongly that you take the moment to do this before you approach Flea.

Once you're ready, speak with Flea to get the battle started. After some mildly amusing dialogue where he corrects you about his gender, he'll attack.

Frog's and Crono's X-Strike will lop a nice 500 points off Flea's HP every time you use it, and other physical attacks such as Blade Toss and Max Cyclone will also do the job nicely. However, I've always found that X-Strike works the best, giving you the best damage for the least amount of MP. Designate your third party member to heal and to cure the status effects Flea's attacks cause. Flea also likes to use and abuse poor Crono, using a tech called The Stare on him. It will cause him to momentarily go berserk and attack everyone in your party before he is damaged himself. Heal as needed, keep hammering him with X-Strike, and he should go down fairly quickly.

A little bat is following you...  Ozzie's Fort is an optional Sidequest that you can go on after Zeal is destroyed and you return to the end of time. The fort is fairly straight-forward and you'll face Flea first. This version of him is pathetic; so toast him with your favorite Techs. After you defeat him, he'll retreat and you'll be facing an equally weak Slash next.

Make sure you have a strong team, because once you've defeated Slash and gone through the Treasure Room, you'll be facing all three at once.

Separate, they were laughable, together than can be a bit on the hard side for this game. They have Double and Triple Techs that can inflict some nasty damage to one or several of your party members. Use Ayla to Charm the trio's protective items from each of them. Once you've done that, I usually concentrate on taking Flea down first. Cube Toss and Ice Sword 2 are effective against him. Once he goes down, go after Slash next, and finally Ozzie.

Chrono Cross___________

A little bat is following you...  In Chrono Cross, the situation is a bit different. The trio makes a cameo appearence after you defeat the game and then go to the Bend of Time in NewGame+ mode.

Set up a strong party of your heaviest hitters. I've found Karsh, Zoah, and Fargo work very well for me, though you may have a different lineup. Whatever you do, make certain you have very strong characters who do a great deal of damage ready to go and then strengthen them further with various items such as Power Seals, Dragoon Gauntlets, etc. Also - since Flea's vest can only be obtained through stealing it - you might want to include one of the three chracters who are able to steal in your party. Also, I'd suggest equipping one (or more if you can) of your characters with the Forget-Me-Not Pot, since Ozzie, Flea, and Slash can be added to Sprigg's Doppleganger ability.

Go for Ozzie first. You need to take him down as fast as possible. He has an Innate Attack called Max Defense that will prevent you from damaging any of them. If he does this the battle is pretty much over, since there's not too much you can do to them. He's a green element and only has about 2000 HP, so plan your attacks carefully. You should be able to take him down to critical with a few Fierce attacks and then able to finish him off with a well-placed yellow attack element.

Once he's gone, you can relax a bit more, since Flea and Slash are not too rough. However, they are still fairly strong and Flea's attacks are very annoying. They might not physically attack you for much - if any - damage, but they can whip out the Omega series of attacks as well as higher end elements. Pick one of the two remaining next. I usually choose Flea, due to the annoyance factor. As in Chrono Trigger, he can use The Stare to cause Chaos status effects. However, unlike Chrono Trigger, he can use it on everyone at once, not just your hero. If you want his vest, have your theif attempt to steal it from him at this point and then pound him with Blue Elements or with strong physical attacks.

Finally, it's time to take Slash down. He's a Blue element, so red elements will do him in nicely.

In the end, you'll be rewarded with a Dreamer's Sash, the Slasher Sword, and Ozzie's Pants.
